Katie Taylor boxing fight in Balbriggan

The Balbriggan boxing club will have a boxing showdown with some of the top Dutch fighters heading to Fingal for a major boxing tournament on May 29th and are  searching Europe for someone to get into the ring with Katie Taylor. We'd probably be lucky to even get a guy to step in there!,' Kieran O'Neill from the club stated this week.

Organised by the Bracken club in Balbriggan, some of Fingal's top talent will be on show against a Dutch team at the North County cricket club.

And what's more local fight fans could also get the chance to see Katie Taylor, the World and European champion, in action, if an opponent can be found.

Turkey, the Netherlands and Germany were all asked for an opponent but nobody wanted to take on the challenge of meeting Taylor.

'We have a few more avenues to chase and hopefully we'll have a girl who'll be prepared to fight Katie on the night. She really wants to show the Fingal public what she can do and we'd love to have her on the bill'.

The first bell is at 8pm, and there's 14 contests. Tickets are 20 euro from club secretary Brendan Purtill 0860576591.

One man that will almost certainly be there is the gutsy Irish champion Robert Gorman.

He is fresh from another great triumph in Wexford when he boxed for Ireland against Scotland.

He was put in against the Scottish No.1, Tony James, and forced him into a standing count in each of the three rounds and it was stopped in the end in the third. He had been leading 9-1 at that stage.

The club has been busy on the national scene with two fighters involved in the Irish nationals. Keith Hammond lost in the quarter finals to the eventual champion. Alan Cunningham also did very well.
