Ray Moylett, World Youth Champion Boxing
Saturday, 01 November 2008
Mayo lightweight Ray Moylett wrote another illustrious chapter in the history of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association after being crowned World Youth 60Kg champion in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday night.
The 18-year-old, from the St Anne's club in Westport, beat 2006 World Cadet champion Daniyar Yeleussino of Kazakhstan 3-1 over four rounds to seal an historic victory for Ireland.
Jamie Kavanagh, from the Crumlin Boxing club, was also in action, but the talented young Dubliner had to be content with silver after he lost out 7-2 to Frank Izla of Cuba.
Ireland will now be taking home one gold, one silver and two bronze medals for the tournament, courtesy of semi-final finishes for Thomas McCarthy and David Joe Joyce.
The medal haul is 50% of the total that Ireland has won at this level before the 2008 Championships.
Moylett boxed clever in Guadalajara, using all his skills to carve out a narrow but deserved win at the Lopez Mateo's Gymnasium.
As reported by Irish team manager Paddy Gallagher, Moylett claimed the first round 1-0 thanks to a solid right.
He extended his lead to 2-0 with another right in the second, but the Kazah reduced to deficit to 2-1 in the third.
However, Moylett doubled his advantage with a tough right in the fourth before being crowned World champion.
In two of his four fights in Mexico, the Westport teenager beat Welsh 2007 European Cadet champion Fred Evans and Cuban National Youth champion Juan Garcia.
