Katie Taylor and Irish Boxers in 2009

The final bell of another highly succesful year for Irish amateur boxing will toll on
December 31st next. World champ Katie Taylor set a new record for international boxing
after she won her fourth European title on the trot without conceding a single point  in
the Ukraine.. Katie Taylor, Joe Ward, Ken Egan, John Joe Nevin, Jason Quigley and the Irish senior team
grabbed the headlines throughout the year.

Nevin, who reached the last 16 at the Beijing Olympics, travelled to Milan and became the
sixth Irishman to medal at World Senior Championships level after bagging bronze.
Olympic silver medalist Egan grabbed the headlines domestically, winning an historic
ninth Irish senior title in a row at the National Stadium in Dublin last February.
The Neilstown club-man will now be vying to match Jim OSullivans haul of ten Irish
seniors belts at the 2010 Championships which begin next February.

Jason Quigley also got in on the act. The Finn Valley club-man took home gold from the
European Youth Championships in Poland and Germany, while Joe Ward claimed a World junior
light middleweight title in Armenia.
Ward, who boxes out of the Westmeath club, stopped three opponents inside the distance en
route to gold in Yerevan.

The nine man Irish senior team were also to the fore, winning three gold, three silver
and three bronze medals and the team of the tournament award at the European Union
Championships in Denmark.
Con Sheehan, Darren ONeill and David Oliver Joyce finished on top of the podium.
Meanwhile, Taylor also won EU gold, bringing Irelands gold medal haul at EU level in the
last three seasons to twelve in total.

The IABA will  celebrate these achievements and more at the Annual Awards Night Friday
8th January 2010 at 8pm. The Wards ceremony will take place at the  Louis Fitzgerald
Hotel, Newlands Cross, Dublin 22.
